| Iyengar-style Yoga Classes About Thea Thea Lloyd has been teaching at the Yoga Center at Solar Hill since 1995 when she moved to Brattleboro with her husband, a school principal, and two sons (now both teens). Thea is a practicing attorney, a partner in the law firm of Hertz & Lloyd, who found yoga in 1979 when she was a law student in Boston. Thea began teaching yoga in 1982 under the tutelage of her Boston teacher, Carol Nelson, and has taught classes ever since, including through both pregnancies and moves to northern and southern Vermont. The study of yoga has been an integral part of Thea’s practice and she frequently takes classes with Carol and other senior teachers. Carol and Thea lived and studied together for a month at the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India in 1987 with Mr. Iyengar, his daughter Geeta and son Prashant. Thea also continues to study with Judith Lasater since first attending a yoga vacation at the Feathered Pipe Ranch in 1982. Judith taught Thea the techniques and importance of restorative postures; her book Relax and Renew: Restorative Yoga, is a best seller and Judith’s frequent articles in Yoga Journal make her a household name. Thea has trained with Dr. Mary Schatz whose work focuses on students with chronic pain and/or injuries; Mary’s book Back Care Basics, is a wonderful guide for those suffering from a variety of back problems. Yoga has influenced Thea’s law practice which has evolved into focusing primarily on mediation, a process where people resolve disputes by finding “win-win” solutions to difficult problems, such as separation and divorce. Integrating law and yoga in assisting people to find peaceful solutions to complex problems has been tremendously satisfying to Thea. Thea’s classes Thea’s teaching style is Iyengar-based; focusing is on alignment in each posture using a gentle, hands-on style and the lovely, melodious Sanskrit names for the postures. Modification
of postures to accommodate all students is essential, including those
with chronic or acute pain, so use of props such as bolsters, blocks,
straps, blankets, sandbags and eyebags is taught. The
importance of the restorative postures is emphasized with every eighth
week of classes being devoted to these quiet, calming poses; using
the yoga props helps all students find ease and comfort in each pose. Class Schedule September 2, 2008- June 19 , 2009 Tuesdays 5:30 --
